Course overview

This art class is for students aged 13-15 years with a strong interest in visual arts. A great class for kids transitioning to High School and wishing to pursue secondary level visual art and who really want to learn much more about art-making, art history, refine and extend their skills in painting and drawing. Students will be encouraged to develop creative thinking and their own visual style.

  During classes at Teens Art Studio students work in small peer groups to investigate drawing, painting, sculpting, printmaking, and much more. They learn to connect the dots through art history, the principles of art and design and art practices from around the world!

Our Instructors will help your child develop their creativity, confidence, and social skills in our HIGH TIDE ART SCHOOL setting.

In our Teens Art Studio, students will develop skills in lessons that are customized to their learning level in sculpture, painting, drawing, and mixed media. They also will create also a multi-directional composition with a variety of materials, paint, images, found objects, and ink painting. Techniques will include collage, monotype printing, drawing, painting, mixing, assemblage, cutting, and pasting, etc.

This is a wonderful chance to create portfolio pieces that can be used for future college applications, or simply as beautiful artwork for the home. For Portfolio Preparation Workshops click here.

Is this course right for my child?

Teens Art Studio classes are aimed at students aged 13-15 years.  Students in Years 11 and 12 at High School are encouraged to attend adult classes.

What to expect

Through structured exercises, students will:

  • learn foundation skills in drawing and painting
  • explore more advanced visual art concepts
  • use more advanced materials (such as oil paints)
  • produce a portfolio of completed artworks

About our visual art classes for teens

Our visual art classes for teens are generally aimed at students in years 8/9 through to year 10 at High School. We encourage students in year 11 and above to enroll in one of our adult classes. The activities are age-appropriate, there is no grading, just fun and informative lessons to stretch and learn new skills and techniques.

The number of students:

6 – 8 students per class.
Two teachers per class.

11 weeks Summer course:
June 13, 2024 – August 29, 2024

Each class consists of one 60-minute lesson.

Tuition fee:
$39.00 +HST per one week.

Classes are held once a week in Kennebecasis Public Library.

Certificate of Course Completion

Upon completion of a course, a Certificate will be issued. A course completion certificate says students attended all the classes required, passed all the tests required, and handed in all the work required.

Module 1. Introduction to Drawing & Sketching

This module gives your child a solid foundation for drawing still-life and compositions. Your child will be taught the basics of sketching and drawing, proportions theory, shading and the effective use of light and shadow. She will learn all the artistic skills needed to bring to life various compositions from their own imagination. They will also learn to use a wide variety of media and art techniques:

Pencils, charcoal, and pastels.

Module 2. Introduction to Painting

This module introduces gouache and acrylics and lets your child explore and experiment with a wide variety of painting mediums and techniques. The fundamentals of color principles are introduced: color theory and perception, color contrasts, techniques of mixing colors, and the best way to utilize color in order to enhance your artwork.
